The power to settle financial complaints.

27 February 2006
Mr Lewis met the chief ombudsman, Walter Merricks, chairman Sir Chris Kelly, and members of the board, to discuss the work of the ombudsman service - including current complaint trends and numbers, and the plans and projects set out in the recently-published corporate plan and 2006/07 budget.
Mr Lewis, the government minister with special responsibility for financial services, also took the opportunity to meet front-line staff and caseworkers from across the organisation. This included listening into calls from consumers, to hear at first hand the diverse range of concerns and complaints handled by the ombudsman service on a day-to-day basis.
